Waterloo
In 1817 a name of Waterloo appeared on the map of Ontario. The city got its name to honor victory over Napoleon (Waterloo Battle, Belgium, 1815). In Belgium, in the museum opened at the place of this historical battle they exhibit an interesting map of the world showing geographical names connected with Waterloo. In 1849 the map included Waterloo County, which in 1972 gained 3 towns and 4 villages.
Around 40% of Waterloo County residents are descendants of Mennonites and German pioneers, who moved here at the beginning of the 19th century. German colonists built several towns, the largest being Kitchener, Waterloo, Hew-Hamburg, Petersburg, and Heidelberg (do you recognize any of European cities?).
Present-day Waterloo is known by its university, which was established in 1957. It is the largest Canadian university in the field of computer and engineering science. Its huge library has a unique collection – books about women or those written by women. The collection was granted to the university by lady Aberdeen, a wife of governor general lord Aberdeen. She also founded the National Council of Women and the Victorian Order of Nurses.
In conclusion I’d like to note that the city of Waterloo was founded in 1806 by Abraham Erb, which is engraved on the city memorial tablet.
Quebec province also has its Waterloo, which is particularly famous for its labyrinth. Nearby there is a well-known Granby Zoo often visited by the residents of Waterloo.
